One of Hinduism’s holiest shrines, Ramanathaswamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and revered as a Jyotirlinga and part of the Char Dham. Famous for its pillared corridors (among the world’s longest), ornate gopurams, and the ritual 22 tirtha wells, it blends grand Dravidian architecture with living pilgrimage traditions.
Located on Rameswaram Island across the Pamban Bridge, the temple is best visited at dawn or evening for darshan and corridor walks; observe modest dress, respect photography limits, and plan time for sacred-bath rituals at the 22 wells. Reachable by rail to Rameswaram Jn. and by road from Madurai (IXM); combine with nearby Dhanushkodi and coastal lagoons for a complete spiritual–seaside circuit.
