Straddling the Tamil Nadu–Andhra coast, Pulicat is India’s second-largest brackish lagoon. On the TN side (Pazhaverkadu), mangroves, mudflats, and saltpans host huge winter flocks of flamingos, pelicans, gulls, and terns, with fishing hamlets and Dutch-era traces adding cultural texture.
~55–60 km north of Chennai via Ponneri–Pazhaverkadu, Pulicat is best at dawn/dusk, Nov–Feb; hire eco-boats from the TN side, wear life jackets, and keep clear of nesting zones near Sriharikota (restricted). Pair birding with the Dutch Cemetery/Old Fort traces, lighthouse views, and seafood stalls an easy, photo-friendly wetland escape for families, students, and nature lovers.
