wave-tour

Raised in the 7th-8th centuries under the Pallava king Rajasimha, the Shore Temple is among South India’s earliest stone-built (structural) temples. With twin Shiva shrines and a reclining Vishnu panel facing the Bay of Bengal, it anchors the UNESCO-listed Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram and showcases the transition from rock-cut to structural Dravidian architecture.

About 55-60 km south of Chennai on the East Coast Road, the seaside complex shines at sunrise and golden hour, with breezy promenades and sculpted Nandi rows framing the towers. Pair your visit with the Pancha Rathas, Arjuna’s Penance/Descent of the Ganges, the lighthouse, and the beach. Dress modestly, respect sanctum rules, and allow time to wander the carved granite courtyards overlooking the surf.
