Tamil Nadu Through Time
From Sangam-age seafarers to smart industries a state built on enterprise and heritage
Tamil Nadu’s story begins with the Sangam Age (500 BCE – 300 CE) a period of remarkable literature, maritime trade, and urban settlements. Ancient Tamil kingdoms
like the Chera, Chola, and Pandya dynasties fostered global trade links with Rome, Egypt, and Southeast Asia, exporting spices, pearls, and textiles through ports such as Puhar and Korkai.
The Cholas (9th–13th century) expanded Tamil influence across the Indian Ocean, building monumental temples and robust naval routes that symbolized both cultuacral and commercial power.
Subsequent periods under Vijayanagara and Nayak rulers strengthened agriculture, crafts, and inland trade networks.

During the British colonial era, Chennai (then Madras) emerged as an administrative and trading hub, connecting South India to global commerce through the East India Company. Industrialization began with textiles, plantations, and railways, laying early foundations for Tamil Nadu’s future economy.
After India’s Independence (1947), Tamil Nadu evolved into one of the nation’s most industrialized and urbanized states. Strategic governance, education reforms, and infrastructure investments turned it into a hub for automobiles, textiles, IT, and renewable energy, continuing a 2,000-year legacy of enterprise and innovation.
