Overstaying your visa can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from re-entering India. Make sure your visa is renewed on time if you plan to stay longer than initially planned.

Some visas (e.g., Tourist Visa) cannot be extended in India. However, certain visas like Employment and Business Visas may be extended. Always check with the local Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for specific extension rules.

Depending on your visa type, you may need to register with the FRRO within 14 days of arrival in India if you are staying for more than 180 days. The registration process includes submitting documents such as your passport, visa, and a recent passport-sized photo.

Expats are advised to have valid health insurance that covers treatment in India, as medical expenses can be high. Many international health insurance plans can be used in India, or you can opt for Indian health insurance coverage.

If you’re staying in India for more than 180 days on certain visas (Employment, Research, etc.), you must register with the local police station.

For short-term travel to India (exploreism, business, medical purposes), you can apply for an e-Visa, which is typically valid for 60 days. This is available for citizens of several countries.
